Lions Mane contains a protein which regulates and promotes the growth, development and maintenance of neurons in the brain. These active compounds are called hericenones and erinacines, which induce a nerve growth factor (NGF) to stimulate the growth, and regrowth of certain pathways in the brain.
Animal studies and clinical trials show it promotes positive brain and nerve health-related activities by inducing the nerve growth factor for neurogenesis of the hippocampus and is believed to prevent the neuronal damage from amyloid-beta plaques.

“The reported health-promoting properties of the mushroom fruit bodies, mycelia, and bioactive pure compounds include antibiotic, anticarcinogenic, antidiabetic, antifatigue, antihypertensive, antihyperlipodemic, antisenescence, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, and neuroprotective properties and improvement of anxiety, cognitive function, and depression. The described anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and immunostimulating properties in cells, animals, and humans seem to be responsible for the multiple health-promoting properties.”

Lions Mane has also been studied for lowering the effects of anxiety and depression, which is due to its anti-inflammatory effects as well as the support for regrowth of brain function.
Lions Mane is seen to boost the immune system that is responsible to protect us from viruses, bacteria and other disease-causing pathogens. One study even found that mice injected with a lethal dose of salmonella bacteria nearly quadrupled the lifespan as a result of supplementing with lion’s mane extract daily.
Lions Mane has been used in traditional Chinese medicine as a tonic for stomach disorders, ulcers and gastrointestinal ailments. Recent finding show clinical potential in relieving IBD by regulating gut microbiota and the immune system.
Lion’s mane extract may also help reduce the severity of brain damage after stroke as tested in rats, which showed that a high dose of Lions Mane decreased inflammation and stroke related brain injury by 44%.
Research shows that lion’s mane extract may be supportive against heart disease by improving fat metabolism and lowering triglyceride levels, and also help prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the bloodstream.
Lion’s mane mushroom may be beneficial for diabetes management by improving blood sugar control by blocking the activity of the enzyme alpha-glucosidase, which breaks down carbs in the small intestine.
Animal and test-tube studies show that lion’s mane extract can kill cancer cells and slow the spread of tumors, but human studies are still needed.
Most research on the active compounds have been done in animal studies with very promising results. Research suggests that Lions Mane may be supportive for:
• Neurodegenerative Diseases like Alzheimer’s, dementia, MS, parkinsons
• Reducing the symptoms of Depression and Anxiety
• Boosting immune system
• Stomach disorders, ulcers and gastrointestinal ailments
• Recovery from nerve damage
• Recovery after stroke
• May reduce risk of heart disease
• Help stabilize glucose levels in managing diabetes
Please note most of these studies are done on animals and more studies are needed for human trials.
